Sleep calculator: work out the best bedtime for you
A sleep calculator will help take the guesswork out of improving your sleep. Knowing when to go to bed could change your sleep quality – and your life – for the better.
If you want to set the right bedtime for yourself or for your kids, you can use an online sleep calculator. Here’s how to make sure your bedtime and sleep cycles add up:
What is a sleep calculator?
A sleep calculator works out what time you need to go to bed or wake up. It will give you suggestions based on the number of sleep cycles you must complete and how much sleep you need in a 24-hour cycle to feel and perform your best.
Waking up in the middle of a sleep cycle can make you feel tired. An online sleep calculator will determine when you have completed your last sleep cycle, as this would be the best time to wake up to feel the most rested.
How much sleep do you need?
The amount of sleep you need depends on your age. As you get older, your sleep needs change.
When you are a baby, your sleep cycles are typically between 40 and 50 minutes long, but as an adult, your sleep cycles are closer to 90 minutes each. Babies need between 11 and 16 hours of sleep in a 24-hour cycle. On the other hand, teenagers and adults need between seven and nine hours.
Online sleep calculators
There are different sleep calculators available online, but we recommend trying one of these:
You can easily calculate your optimal bedtime without using an online sleep calculator. The average sleep cycle for an adult is 90 minutes long, and a typical night includes five to six cycles. Considering this, you can use the following equation:
90 x 5 = 450 minutes, or 7.5 hours.
90 x 6 = 540 minutes, or 9 hours
Once you know how many hours of sleep you need, you can start with the time you need to wake up and start counting back from there to establish your bedtime.
Make sure you get enough sleep
If you want to be as healthy as possible and feel your best, you need to get enough good quality sleep, which you can improve by practicing good sleep hygiene habits.
With the help of sleep calculators, you can use technology to your advantage, establish a regular bedtime routine, and sleep your way to a healthier you.
