6 TV bedroom makeovers reviewed by sleep experts
From the Queen of Westeros to our favourite fashion femme in Sex and the City, we’ve rounded up the best on-screen TV bedrooms (with their characters, of course) for a little sleep-decor makeover. If you’ve ever wondered how on earth Golden Girl, Blanche Devereaux, managed to get any sleep beneath her wild wallpaper, or if the Flintstones slept at all, you’ve come to the right place.
We recreated these iconic bedrooms and asked our community of sleep experts to review them. This is what they say good sleep looks like. On and off the screen.
Cersei’s bedroom, Game of Thrones
Could it have been Cersei’s poor sleeping habits that were responsible for her seven-seasons long reign of misery on Thrones? We can say this: if you’re sleep-deprived and irritable, you’re not likely to make sound judgements.
Had her bedroom been a little more complimentary to sleep, her fate might’ve ended where she performs best (beneath the sheets) rather than beneath the rubble of the Red Keep…
So let’s take a look at why she should have traded in the Iron Throne for this sleep-inducing chamber of comfort instead.
- We suspect that with the fate of King’s Landing laying heavily on her shoulders (not forgetting the Mother of Dragons fast on her way to lay siege to the city), Cersei may suffer from stress and anxiety at bedtime, which is why we love that her reimagined room provides a much-needed respite from the tensions of the day. There’s plenty of space to unroll a yoga mat and do some light stretching before bed, or curl up on one of the wingback chairs and do some journaling. (Dear Jamie…)
- Darker colours on walls and floors can make larger spaces feel more intimate and warm, which creates a cosy feeling in this stone room. We’d add a rug under the bed to further warm it up. Winter is coming, after all.
- While the large windows are great for letting the morning light shine in (keeping the circadian rhythm in sync), when it’s time for lights off, there should be no environmental light seeping into the sleep space. Luckily, the heavy drapes on the four-poster bed will shut out any light and other distractions, allowing Cersei to fall asleep faster and stay asleep for longer.
- Soft linens, with accents of fur and velvet, invite comfortable sleep. If you toss and turn all night trying to find a comfortable position, your sleep gets disrupted. And if disrupted sleep becomes the norm, it could lead to fatigue, depression, and poor decision-making abilities – common side effects of sleep deprivation, which as we know, didn’t end well for the Lannisters.
Fred and Wilma’s bedroom, The Flintstones
The Flintstones are a page right out of history, and you can take a page from Wilma and Fred on how they get their z’s… their bedroom forms the bedrock of an ideal sleep-inducing environment!
Here’s how they’re getting it yabba-dabba-doo right, and where they can make some small changes for even better sleep:
- We love where the bed is positioned in the room. When you walk in, it’s an invitation to go to sleep.
- The room is spacious and not too cluttered. Clutter not only becomes a problem if you trip over it on your way to the bathroom in the middle of the night, but a cluttered room can be too stimulating and is not optimal for sleep.
- We give five gold dinosaur eggs to Fred and Wilma for their choice in bedding. Their blue bedding promotes relaxation before bed. The beige walls and white stone used for the bed further add to the relaxing colour scheme.
- The stone used to build their house and their bed will help keep them cool at night. A room that is too hot makes it harder to sleep.
- However, being too cold can make you equally uncomfortable. The fur rug on the floor helps to keep things cosy, and they might want to add an extra rug or two next to the bed when winter comes, so their feet won’t touch the cold stone when they wake up.
- It’s a good thing that LED lights hadn’t been invented yet. Blue light can interfere with the quality of your sleep by interfering with melatonin production, which is why you should choose warm lighting similar to the lighting in this room, which is best for promoting sleep.
- Their choice of a firm mattress is excellent for a healthy sleeping posture.
- We suggest adding a window for ventilation. Just make sure it’s covered with a chic pelt to keep the room dark at night.
Blanche’s bedroom, Golden Girls
All hail the four sassy Miami ladies of the Golden Girls! Set in the 80s, their style, one-liners and ability to convey anything with a drizzle of sarcasm, provided many needed reminders of what true friendship was about.
We know that Blanche was the diva of the lot, so we can’t blame her for going full tilt on the decor (remember her wild wallpaper of giant palm leaves?). After all, she was about making a statement. But what kind of statement was her bedroom making on her sleep?
Blanche once asked the question: “Dorothy, what do you think I oughta do with my bed?”
We’re happy you asked.
- When it comes to intimate spaces (the bedroom), the decor of the room needs to honour the space it’s used for. In this case, the bed is the main centrepiece, reminding Blanche that this is a dedicated sleep space.
- We love the toned-down print on the wallpaper. If you choose too bold a print for your bedroom, it can overstimulate your mind, making it hard to fall asleep.
- Bedside lamps can create a lot of clutter, but here, the lamps are tastefully chosen to provide enough light for an evening read, a session of light callisthenics, or some guided meditation to wind down to sleep. Too bright a light can trigger the body clock to stay awake.
- Blanche was never one to shy away from the limelight, but no-one wants to see the sass in your sleep. Good quality sleep requires a dark, quiet room that is free of distractions. We love that she’s drawn the curtains… let the outside world keep guessing.
- A big bed (even for one) allows her to find her perfect position for sleep. Even if the best sleeping position is on her back (she might argue it’s on top), there’s still enough room to prevent bed partners from disturbing one another in their sleep.
Carrie’s bedroom, Sex and the City
Trendy, stylish and sassy, Carrie Bradshaw became an instant classic. Her Manhattan address reflected her love of fashion, vintage decor and art. We’ve given it a fresh face, but is it a picture-perfect sleep sanctuary, worthy of the cover of Vogue? What we do know, is that if you want to wake up with a Jimmy Choo spring in your step, you need to make sleep a priority.
- Even though the city is the other leading lady of SATC, we’re glad to see that Carrie has closed the curtains on NYC for a darker, quieter room. Your sleep environment plays an important role in promoting better sleep (and you need those good z’s to activate your beauty sleep).
- When it comes to your sleep environment, the more soothing, the better. We love the calming colour of the walls – it will really help bring on restorative rest.
- Art is chic, but it can be a fashion faux pas in the sleep department, triggering the mind and making it difficult to fall asleep.
- An untidy room is synonymous with an untidy mind. We’re glad that Carrie has cleared her clutter to prioritise her sleep.
Bart’s bedroom, The Simpsons
For 31 years, the Simpsons’ couch took the spotlight, but it’s Bart’s bedroom that really deserves more attention. More attention to sleep quality that is. As the longest-running scripted TV show on American TV, we think Bart’s bedroom has inspired many a sleep space. The question is, should you model your room according to Bart’s taste?
Only if you follow our advice with this sleep-promoting makeover.
- The Simpsons are all about those primary colours. But these stay-awake tones should stay well clear of the bedroom. Softer hues and less stimulating shades are better for bringing on the z’s. We’d tone down the colours in this room even more. Pastel hues are far more calming and better to bring on the z’s.
- We say change the curtains from yellow to a dark navy blue. If your curtains are too light in colour, there’ll be too much environmental light stealing into your sleep space. This can affect your body clock, messing up the natural rhythms of sleep.
- It’s nice to see he’s tidied up his room (Marge would be proud), but we suggest removing the shelf for an entirely uncluttered view above the bed.
Rachel’s bedroom, Friends
Rachel is known for her beauty, but is that because she gets quality beauty sleep? We gave her NYC bedroom “the Rachel cut” (boy do we miss those 90s haircuts) and a magic forty-winks makeover. How does it measure up in terms of beauty and sleep benefits?
- Rachel’s bedroom was originally mainly pink, but we changed the colour scheme to light blue, beige, white and grey with hints of pink instead, as these colours are less stimulating and can promote relaxation and good sleep.
- The lighting in Rachel’s room is great. She should stick to the warm lighting in the room and avoid LED lights with blue tones, as blue light can interfere with melatonin production.
- When you live in the city that never sleeps, it can be hard to get your z’s amongst the always-on lights and neverending noise. Any light exposure during sleep can lower sleep quality. We love the long, dark curtain in front of the window, which shuts out the light from outside.
- To shut out the noise, we suggest that Rachel invest in some earplugs to block out the clamour of the busy city (or any noises coming from Joey and Chandler across the hall). She can also get a white or pink noise machine to drown out any noise. A white noise sleep aid makes noises that include all sound frequencies that are equally distributed and can mask any noises coming into the room while you’re trying to sleep. A pink noise machine also makes all the sound frequencies, but they are not equally distributed.
- While Rachel was always a little scatterbrained, her new room is anything but disorderly. An uncluttered sleep space goes a long way towards improving the quality of your z’s. This is because clutter can be stimulating and make it harder to fall asleep.
If you’ve been inspired by these TV bedroom makeovers and feel like your sleep sanctuary is not entirely giving you the relaxing ambience needed to induce sleep, try not to be like the Queen of Thrones and take your sleep-deprived revenge out on your decorator.
Instead, focus on your sleep hygiene, design, practical setup, soft lighting, soothing sounds and serene smells. If you can tick all these boxes, you may just find your bedroom playing the starring role in your own sweet dreams TV show.
